The snow was one of the toughest things any of the cats had needed to walk through. The mountains were not too far away, and yet were still too far away to celebrate. When Hawkpaw fell into the cold frost, the entire band decided that they’d stop for the night. The newest member of their band, Heather, was the only one who seemed to enjoy the cold around her paws but was extremely grateful to stop walking.
“Hawkpaw, do you know how much further?” Shrewblossom mumbled the question, gazing toward the apprentice, who shook his head in response. “Sorry, I thought StarClan might have said something to you.”
“Yeah, I figured. But they haven’t said anything.” Hawkpaw’s voice was quiet as he felt sleep take over his body. The cold continued to batter the cats through the night, jolting them awake and quickly sending them back to sleep, but Hawkpaw was in another world entirely. He’d never seen it before, but he knew by the stars around him that these were StarClan’s hunting grounds. A gorgeous ginger she-cat appeared before him “Who are you?” The apprentice asked with little fear. There was an oddly comforting aura around her, and her smile made him feel warm and loved.
“Who do you think I am?” Her voice was truly one of a StarClan cat; sweet and sincere with a dash of motherly love. Hawkpaw stumbled through his mind, trying to think of any ginger cats that stood out to him, when suddenly-
“I have no idea.” The she-cat laughed at his response, but shook her head. “I’m sorry.”
“You will find out in due time, Hawkpaw. I know what you want to know.” His eyes lit up at her words. “You are not far from your destination. Trust me. Continue heading towards the mountain and you will find what this journey is for.” He couldn’t even mutter a thank you before her pelt turned into stardust and he awoke in the snow once more.
Hawkpaw quickly woke his friends and told him about what had happened; none of the others knew who the she-cat was, but all were excited that they had some guidance for the rest of their journey.
Maybe they’d be home before Hawkpaw was of warrior age?

The forest seemed oddly quiet for almost midday. Honeyleaf was leading the patrol along the western border, with Firepaw, Thorntooth, and Lilybreeze following her footsteps. According to Thorntooth, it was a test of the new warrior’s abilities, though Lilybreeze had also been on so few patrols that it was still a new and unfamiliar experience for her. With minor discussions being shut down by the deputy, they walked in silence until the reached the northern border. Thorntooth scented the beast first, but opted to wait until their patrol leader put out the alarm.
She didn’t.
In one simple swoop, the fox lunged toward the patrol, yapping its jaws to try and get a bite of the cats. It went for Honeyleaf’s neck, but Firepaw managed to knock her away in time. With a few well-timed hits, Lilybreeze and Thorntooth managed to slice through its wiry fur and draw blood. Each attack it gave, they gave back twice as hard. The apprentice stood to the side watching as the other cats fought, attempting to calm down the nervous wreck Honeyleaf had become. Eventually the fox grew too tired and bloodied to continue, and with a snarl bolted away, presumably back to its den.
Thorntooth, blood dripping from a wound on his head, growled at Honeyleaf for not noticing and warning the party about the fox. Tears pricked at her eyes as he went on and on the entire walk back to camp, her heart hurting every step of the way.
