With the sun beaming down on Sun’s Peak, a group of BoulderClan she-cats lounged about in the almost forgotten warmth. With the Days of Rainfall over, the sun had started to shine brighter, and the entire clan was feeling a buzz. Mapleclaw positioned herself on the very top of the stone, with Ravenbriar, Lilybreeze and Panthereye surrounding her below. They were all spaced out enough so that they had their own room, but were still able to talk easily. It was a peace they all missed, and they all knew that if Thorntooth found them off duty like this, he’d claw their ears off.
“So, Lilybreeze, are you and Tigerstep back together yet?” Ravenbriar asked, raising an eyebrow, causing the other she-cat to fake a gag.
“He abandoned me and our child. I don’t think we’ll ever be together again.” Her words were harsh, but her tone showed a different feeling.
Panthereye’s joints creaked as she stood up, wandering over to the other girls. “Stop lying to yourself.” Her pretty green eyes peered down at Lilybreeze. “You love him, and you can’t deny it.” She opened her mouth to reply but was cut off as the elder sat down. “None of us would make you talk to him and confess your inner feelings, but it’s painfully obvious.” The other she-cats all tried to hide their laughs, causing Lilybreeze’s face to heat up.
“He hurt me, Panthereye.” The elder nodded at her words.
“I know, darling. I know. But from what I understand, he didn’t have much choice.” Her tail flicked as she chose her next words carefully. “Don’t hold all the blame on him. Some of it, but not all of it.”
A calming wave flooded over Lilybreeze, though a harsh laugh from Mapleclaw sent chills down her spine. “You’re a good cat, Lilybreeze. You deserve better than him for what he did.” Her hauntingly graceful steps padded down from the top of the rock. Her eyes briefly met Panthereye’s own, and with fire burning in the old cat’s soul, Mapleclaw mentally stepped back. “I don’t understand love, and why it’s so important to you all.” Her tail curled around her paws as she sat by the group. “That was probably very offensive of me.”
The borderline kindness from Mapleclaw’s own mouth shocked the entire group. It was such a sudden change in tone that nobody really knew how to react. The calico hopped off the rock and slowly began walking back towards the camp, leaving three very confused she-cats to sunbake for hours more.

In the cold and harsh, the dangerous fledgling rises; the strongest beast and the smallest creature obey their command. Only when the mighty bird goes for the wrong prey will fire drown them all. The flames will consume the sharpest of spines before towering above and reaching the skies.
“Hawkpaw, you have been chosen by StarClan to go on an…adventure.” Falcondream’s voice shook as he looked down on the apprentice, whose face paled at his words. “They have not specified who should go with you, if anyone, so with Lionstar’s permission I ask that you choose one or two cats to accompany you.” Silence whispered through the clan as the medicine cat held the younger’s stare. It broke his already fragile heart to see the cat so frightened.
“D-do I have to go?” Hawkpaw’s voice broke, and Falcondream found himself quickly on the verge of tears. He hated being StarClan’s messenger. With a polite nod, the apprentice gulped. “Why me?”
Falcondream did not know the true answer to that and would probably never know. StarClan was cryptic like that. “I do not know. But if I understand them correctly, you are the cat for this journey.” A few brief words were spoken and Hawkpaw, along with his siblings, hurried off to the apprentice den to discuss who should go with him. Falcondream’s eyes looked towards Lionstar, but his leader refused to look him in the eye. Despite him knowing about the prophecy that had been forced on the clan, Lionstar did not want to see his children in danger. And Falcondream could only attempt to sympathise with him.

“Hawkpaw, that’s so cool that you’ve been chosen!” Pigeonpaw seemed to be too excited for her brother to handle. This was a bigger deal than any of them could comprehend, and Hawkpaw wanted them to understand that, but he didn’t have the words to describe it.
“Pigeonpaw, calm down. He could die out there.” Sunpaw’s voice was significantly calmer, but her words sent shivers down his spine. The only one who remained silent was Firepaw, who seemed to almost grieve for his brother who was sitting beside him, still alive.
Hawkpaw cleared his throat, gaining his sisters’ attention. “I don’t know who to take.” Both Pigeonpaw and Sunpaw opened their mouths to speak, but with a harsh flick of his tail, they both quietened. “I’m not taking any of your mentors. Or mine. I don’t want anything bad to happen to them. But I don’t want anything bad to happen to anyone else.”
“What about Aldertail?” Sunpaw scoffed. “He’s old and will probably die soon anyway.”
Hawkpaw’s jaw dropped, but he regained his composure. “No, I don’t want to take anyone who’s too old. If we get into a fight, I need someone able to fight with me.” Moments of silence passed until Firepaw decided to speak up.
“Tigerstep would be a good choice. He’s a very capable warrior, and the only thing that would tie him down is his love for Lilybreeze.” Hawkpaw nodded at his brother’s words. “He might even be grateful for the opportunity to prove himself to her.”
“And if you do that, it rules out Lilybreeze, because she’d absolutely hate needing to stick with Tigerstep.” Pigeonpaw squeaked, and the others nodded in agreement.
Sunpaw flicked her tail gently as another name came into mind. “Berrysong. She went on a journey to come to this clan. Surely she’d be good?” As Pigeonpaw nodded, Hawkpaw chuckled at how absurd it would be.
“Aldertail would try and kill me himself if I wanted to take his mate away from him. And besides, there are rumours that she’s expecting kits.” His sisters both gasped, but Firepaw seemed to agree. How either of them heard the rumours was unknown, but even if they were false, it would be a stupid idea to risk taking a pregnant queen somewhere unknown.
Silence once again drifted over the four apprentices as their brains churned, trying to figure out who else would be perfect for the adventure Hawkpaw would be going on. Suddenly, Pigeonpaw jumped from her spot, causing her siblings to look over in pure shock. “Honeyleaf!” Hawkpaw sighed as she settled down, and as Sunpaw enthused over the idea, the look on Firepaw’s face sent chills through his brother’s small body.
“No.” Hawkpaw replied, glancing towards Firepaw. Pigeonpaw tried to interject, but Hawkpaw swished his tail impatiently. “I said no. I will not take her on this journey.” His sister calmed down, albeit unwillingly. Trying not to draw attention to himself, Firepaw smiled at his brother, appreciating the kind gesture.
As an attempt to draw the focus away from Honeyleaf, Firepaw offered another cat. “Shrewblossom. He’s not the strongest cat, but he’s young and has a big heart. I think if pushed came to shove, he’d risk his life to save yours.”
Hawkpaw’s mouth went dry. “You shouldn’t be thinking that way.”
“You’re my brother. You’re our brother. Of course I’m going to think that way.” As their sisters voiced their agreement, Hawkpaw sighed and nodded. Tigerstep and Shrewblossom it was.

The cold morning air sent chills down the apprentice’s spine as he stood by the camp’s entrance. He had said goodbye to his siblings the night before, and had slept in the medicine den, and had watched as Falcondream paced with guilt oozing from his body. The young medicine cat did not want to send Hawkpaw away, but everyone knew he had no choice in the matter. When Hawkpaw woke, Falcondream was nowhere to be seen, but when he exited the den without a scrap for breakfast, he saw the medicine cat standing by two all too familiar shapes.
“Roseflame didn’t want to be here.” Lionstar’s voice was calm and gentle; a true leader shining through. “She was too upset at the thought of her child leaving and possibly not coming back.” His words, though harsh, were unbelievably true, though Falcondream shuffled his paws uncomfortably at hearing how blunt his leader was being.
“Who are you taking?” Stonecloud asked. “I’ll go wake them up. Everyone was pretty on edge yesterday, but I think they’ve all come to terms with this situation.” His kind, orange eyes would be one thing Hawkpaw truly missed about his clan.
“Um, Tigerstep and Shrewblossom, please.” None of the older cats seemed shocked at his choice. Without a questioning comment, Stonecloud ducked away to the warrior’s den. The apprentice looked up at Falcondream briefly, and upon seeing tears pricking at his eyes, pressed his nose to his shoulder.
“It isn’t your fault, Falcondream.” The medicine cat’s body shook. “You are only StarClan’s messenger. I think we all know that if you had it your way, you wouldn’t be sending anyone anywhere.” Hawkpaw moved away slowly and looked towards Lionstar, who was nodding at his words.
“My son is right. Falcondream, please do not be so hard on yourself.” Before the younger cat could reply, Stonecloud, Tigerstep and Shrewblossom approached. Shrewblossom was clearly a nervous wreck, but Tigerstep walked with a purpose in his paws.
The older of the two cats spoke gently, keeping his composure. “Lionstar, we will do everything in our power to protect Hawkpaw on this journey.” A vow that all the cats knew Tigerstep and Shrewblossom would both uphold until their final breaths. Tigerstep pressed his nose gently to Hawkpaw’s head, and Shrewblossom quickly did the same.
“Go north and keep going north until you hit the snow.” Hawkpaw’s jaw dropped; the snow was so, so far away. Falcondream sensed his discomfort and adjusted his tone. “It will be a long journey, and you will probably face things you never would have faced here.” His brain began overthinking his words and quickly his stutter returned. “B-but you will be fine. Everything w-will be fine. Y-you will be safe. S-StarClan guide you.” The other cats all saw the tears in his eyes as Falcondream ran towards the medicine den, ashamed of what he had to do.
“We will comfort him. I’m sure we all still think of him as a newcomer to the clan, even though he’s been here for longer than most.” Stonecloud spoke softly, his voice managing to calm Hawkpaw’s increasingly beating heart. But the time for pleasantries was over. This journey was going to be the biggest step of Hawkpaw’s life, and he was lucky to have the fierce tiger and the quiet shrew by his side.
