"C'mon, Shadowpaw! I don't care if you're the newest member of the clan, you're my apprentice, therefore you have to actually listen to me!" Thorntooth's voice was harsher than he intended, but the small cat didn't care. She just shrugged and continued walking. A growl rose in his throat but he didn't dare pounce; she was his apprentice after all, and he didn't expect it to be an easy job. Her steps were loud across the plains, like she was purposefully crunching every bit of dried grass that she could, just to annoy her mentor.
"I'm bored out here. Can we just go home?" Shadowpaw sulked, but a stern look from Thorntooth made her quiet. She was about to continue walking but he moved in front of her, blocking her path. The apprentice let out an audible sigh. "What now?"
"Rabbits." Thorntooth's voice was nothing more than a whisper. "I hope you remember how to sneak." He mumbled more to himself than his apprentice. Shadowpaw's ears perked up, and she followed his movements, excited that something was actually happening. Each step felt like an eternity to the child, but soon they became very close; an easy distance to pounce. "When I say go, pounce on the smaller one." She nodded at his words, but as her mentor went to open his mouth, a twig snapping nearby scared the rabbits away. Thorntooth let out a sigh. "You go and see what made that noise. I'll try and catch a rabbit."
Shadowpaw quickly darted away from the tom, slipping through the grass, trying to make as little noise as possible. She licked her lips at the thought of it being more prey for the camp. However, she felt herself stumble and came face to face with an extremely large tom towering over her. His sheer size rivaled Lionwing's, though his pelt was as dark as night. "Well, well, what do we have here. A kit." He laughed at her sprawled on the ground.
"I am not a kit! I am an apprentice!" Her voice was high pitched and childish, making the other cat laugh again.
"You're one of those stupid clan cats, aren't you?" She let out a small growl at the word stupid.
"We are not stupid! I am a proud member of BoulderClan." The tom went to say something snarky in reply, but quickly found himself running away with blood dripping down his face. Thorntooth stood beside his apprentice, shaking the blood from his claws.
"Are you hurt?" He asked Shadowpaw, earning a shake of the head in reply. "Good. I caught a rabbit. Not terribly large, but large enough for the clan I think. Good to see you're not hurt." Shadowpaw was silent the rest of the journey.
